In its third year of existence, Project Vyoma has progressed leaps and bounds: technically as well as in various facets of project managements. One of the core improvements in technical arena is the use of styrofoam for ribs and hollow metal rod for spars. This, along with critically placed holes on the ribs, has reduced the weight of the wing by an astonishing 57 % whilst retaining the same strength. This saving translates directly into increased payload carrying capacity of the aircraft amongst a host of other advantages. The Team also plans to introduce winglets and flaps which have been known to dramatically improve efficiency of low-speed fight. Another important weight-saving feature has been the construction of fuselage as a truss structure. This reduces the weight of the carrying structure and improves on strength comp
ared to the previous configuration. It is proposed to incorporate a diffuser mechanism which aims at marginally increasing thrust from the engine. But the biggest improvement happens to be the introduction of avionics which will augment the capabilities of the aircraft. Various sensors will be used to monitor aircraft parameters and this information will be relayed real time. A GPS system will also be installed for tracking the plane. In the future, this along with the sensors will be used to autonomously control the aircraft, thereby achieving total fight autonomy.

The SAE Aero Design competition was held at Marietta, Georgia, USA from 3rd to 5th April, 2009. After all the formalities of evaluation and design verification, the plane was cleared for take-off. The plane had twice the number of successful flights and three times the payload capacity than the first plane owing to improvements in the plane design. The plane secured 20th position among the 45 teams that participated.

The SAE Aero Design competition was held at Marietta, Georgia, USA during 18th to 20th April, 2008. India’s first ever entry for the competition was Team Vyoma from RV College of Engineering, Bangalore. The airworthiness of the plane was examined by experts from Lockheed Martin, GE and Boeing. The plane secured a commendable 18th among 40 teams that participated in the event and the organizers announced 'The budding champions from India have arrived!'. The team was awarded 'Certificate of Outstanding Performance' by SAE. In recognition of these achievements, the team received 'Certificate of Appreciation' from Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Prathibha Patil.
